Surrogacy: A Human Rights Violation
by Renate Klein

Renate Klein is a national treasure. Where's her OA medal for services to women? This new book adds to her impressive list of publications in which she fiercely defends women's safety and bodily integrity. —Selena Ewing
In Surrogacy: A Human Rights Violation Renate Klein details her objections to surrogacy by examining the short- and long-term harms done to the so-called surrogate mothers, egg providers and the female partner in a heterosexual commissioning couple. Klein also looks at the rights of children and compares surrogacy to (forced) adoption practices. She concludes that surrogacy, whether so-called altruistic or commercial can never be ethical and outlines forms of resistance to Stop Surrogacy Now.
I'm the Girl Who Was Raped
by Michelle Hattingh

I am the statistic that I read about. I am the thing I always feared most. I am rape.
That morning, Michelle had presented her psychology thesis on rape. It began: ‘A woman born in South Africa has a greater chance of being raped than learning how to read …’ That evening, celebrating her degree, she and a friend go to the beach, where they are robbed, assaulted and raped. Despite the support and resources of her successful middle-class family at her disposal, Michelle has to fight to regain her life, losing friendships, jobs and her identity along the way. She realises she’ll never be the same again. This story is one shared by women throughout the world — of living through a nightmare and trying to hold onto sanity. This is the story of the girl who was raped.
Michelle Hattingh is devastatingly, heartbreakingly honest as she recounts her own experience of rape and its aftermath.— Betty McLellan, feminist ethicist, psychotherapist and author
Forthcoming Release for October
The Pimping of Prostitution: Abolishing the Sex Work Myth by Julie Bindel

This book examines one of the most contested issues facing feminists, human rights activists and governments around the globe – the international sex trade. For decades, the liberal left has been conflicted as to whether ‘sex worker’ activists or abolitionists hold the correct view, and debates are ongoing as to who holds the key to the solutions facing the women and girls involved.
Julie Bindel knows violence against women when she sees it. In this amazing investigative book, she manages to break through the mist and exposes the realities of how the sex trade actually works - and who it benefits. —Nimco Ali, activist and writer

Book Reviews
Gardasil: Fast-Tracked and Flawed
by Helen Lobato

Lobato details the flawed science, egotism, Big Pharma profiteering, political manouvering and media failures behind this dangerous HPV vaccine that was never properly tested. She calls on concerned citizens to publicize the truth, and for moratoriums, independent inquiries and compensation to be put in place. A powerful rallying cry.— Ruth Parnell, Nexus Magazine
Adoption Deception: A personal and professional journey
by Penny Mackieson

This is a powerful and passionate book about the personal and political aspects of adoption. While it is overwhelmingly negative about adoption and the author believes the practice is outdated and should cease, she does present strong arguments for her case. — Sue Bond, PhD candidate at Central Queensland University, Australian Women's Book Review
Big Porn Inc: Exposing the Harms of the Global Pornography Industry
Edited by Melinda Tankard Reist and Abigail Bray

This is by far the best and most significant of these recent books. It comes from Spinifex, a feminist press in Australia, where radical feminism is prospering rather more than in the U.S. (Spinifex was recently profiled by Barry, 2016). With 40 solid chapters, this is the richest such feminist collection since Laura Lederer’s (1980) Take Back the Night: Women on Pornography and/or Diana Russell’s (1983) Making Violence Sexy: Feminist Views on Pornography. — Robert Bannon in Dignity: A Journal on Sexual Exploitation and Violence

Authors in the Media

It was Milka, Dragana informed me, a woman displaced from Zenica, who is only in her late 40s but looks like she is in her 60s. Milka is mentally ill; she wanders through the town and talks to herself. People know of her, but not the story hidden in her bodily appearance.
— Olivera Simić, author of Surviving Peace: A Political Memoir, from her new essay called 'Drinking Coffee in Bosnia: Listening to Stories of Wartime Violence and Rape'.

In a podcast produced by the Coalition for a Feminist Agenda, author of four great Spinifex books Betty McLellan focuses on what the election of Donald Trump means for women the world over, and discusses the need for radical feminists to review and reinvigorate their feminist analysis and activism. 'It is an absolute necessity that feminists remain informed and relevant in today’s dark times,' she says.
