Welcome to the August edition of The Spin newsletter from the award-winning independent
feminist press. It is only two short weeks until our celebration of Spinifex 25 years.
That's Radical Feminism is two days of inspiration being held on September 9-10 at the Lithuanian Club, 44 Errol St, North Melbourne. Please join us in celebrating 25 years of feminist publishing made possible by two wonderful publishers and authors, Renate Klein and Susan Hawthorne.
Friday September 9
Registration 1 pm - 2 pm
Sessions 2 pm - 5 pm
6-8 pm Celebrations - hosted by Sue Ingleton
Friday includes stimulating discussions on the Politics of Feminist Publishing, Patriarchy and Poetry, Lesbian Health: Disappeared from the Agenda, Masculinity and the Ruling of the World, and much, much more. The evening, hosted by Sue Ingleton includes meeting the writers and the launch of the new 25 year Spinifex catalogue, celebration with poets, a choir and special guest Kavisha Mazzella AM.
Saturday September 10
Registration 8.30 - 9.30 am
Sessions 9.30 - 6 pm
Saturday begins with The Radical in Radical Feminism with Angry Sheilas responding, followed by sessions on The Scourge of Sexual Violence, and Institutional and Medical Violence. The afternoon events include Writing from the Edge: Fiction, Poetry, YA fiction, Theatre, and Writing for Our Lives: Biography, Duography and Autobiography. Saturday's sessions finish with the writing up of a Radical Feminist Manifesto. After that it's the bar and drinks and talk.

25th Anniversary Catalogue
Just published our 25th Anniversary Catalogue which is a celebration of our authors and everyone who has worked at Spinifex over its 25 year history. This 1991-2016 Catalogue reflects the breadth and depth of our list and will be launched at 'That's Radical Feminism' - our forthcoming two day celebration

At the Broome book launch this month author of Holding Yawulyu Zohl dé Ishtar and author and journalist Jacqueline Wright explored the complex issues hindering the right of Indigenous peoples to self-determinaion, the dangers of a single story and the way forward for genuine partnerships.
Mapping inter-cultural relationships as they are played out in a remote Aboriginal settlement in Western Australia's Great Sandy Desert, this book challenges White Australians to reconsider their relationship with Indigenous peoples.
Townsville launch of Prostitution Narratives was held on Sunday August 21
Prostitution Narratives was launched by author Betty McLellan.
Speakers included the editors, Melinda Tankard Reist, Caroline Norma & survivors (whose stories are in the book), along with Susan Hawthorne and Renate klein.
Prostitution Narratives: Stories of Survival in the Sex Trade, edited by Caroline Norma & Melinda Tankard Reist, documents the reality of prostitution and the great cost to the lives of women and girls.
Author Events
Susan Hawthorne with Helen Ramoutsaki at the 2016 Cairns Tropical Writers Festival. Susan and Helen took part in a poetry session on 'Cyclones'. Susan also took part in a panel discussion on the 'Future of Australian Publishing', a performance event, 'Poet's Picnic, and presented a Masterclass 'Why Poetry'.

With Meagan Tyler who is a contributor to Prostitution Narratives and Big Porn inc.

Bibliodiversity How do publishers shape the face of diversity in books? Indian feminist publisher Urvashi Butalia, Spinifex Press’s Susan Hawthorne author of Bibliodiversity and YA publisher Marisa Pintado discuss the importance of bibliodiversity, giving a behind-the-scenes look at how publishers curate stories and storytellers from different walks of life. Urvashi Butalia is a Spinifex author and a contributor to September 11.
