FESTIVAL
 
The Melbourne Writers Festival is done and dusted for another year. It was a wonderful Festival, and Spinifex was very pleased to bring author Anne Ch. Ostby over for the festivities (with many thanks to the Norwegian Embassy). Anne had a wonderful time, and her 'Bookwallah' session was sold out!
 
Another Spinifex author who enjoyed the Festival was Francesca Rendle-Short, pictured above with authors Margo Lanagan and Kirsty Gunn in the 'Style Versus Content' session she chaired. Francesca was also featured in an MWF Digital Reporter video interview, disucssing a short story anthology she contributed to. Check out the Just Between Us video!
EVENTS
After the Festival, Anne took part in a number of Australian events, promoting and launching her book Town of Love.
She was part of a panel of women discussing 'Contagious Justice', organised in conjunction with The Victorian Women's Trust and Project Respect. A summary of that event can be found on the Spinifex blog.
 
Anne also travelled to Canberra to launch Town of Love at Paperchain Bookstore, and sit for an In Conversation discussion with author Kaaron Warren. They discussed Women, Confinement, and Inspiration, and the event was launched by Diane Bell (pictured above with Kaaron and Anne).

INTERVIEWS
  
Rachel Moran was interviewed by Meghan Murphy for Feminist Current, discussing her book Paid For: My Journey Through Prostitution. The Podcast is now available, and is a very thought-provoking discussion about the book, Rachel's seven years working as a prostitute and combatting prostitution myths perpetuated by the media and sex industries. Murphy calls Paid For "an incredibly powerful and brutally honest read."
 
Listen to an interview with Janice Raymond, discussing her new book Not a Choice, Not a Job: Exposing the Myths about Prostitution and the Global Sex Trade; "I think when people think about legalizing prostitution, they think automatically that it protects the women because there is this philosophy, especially in the United States, that to regulate something is to make it better. To make it more reasonable. To cancel out the bad stuff, so just the good stuff remains. But that's not what happens..." The full interview here.
AUTHOR NEWS
 
Spinifex author and renowned environmental activist, Vandana Shiva, will be in Sydney for the Festival of Dangerous Ideas. Vandana's latest book is Making Peace with the Earth: Beyond Resource, Land and Food Wars, and her FODI event on Sunday November 3 is titled Growth = Poverty. She will be discussing how, hard as it may be for the West to understand, protecting the ecological resources of communities might be more important than GDP figures.
"You can’t free Egypt without freeing Egyptian women." —Nawal El Saadawi
Nawal El Saadawi is an Egyptian feminist writer, activist, physician and psychiatrist. She has written many books on the subject of women in Islam, and has recently been speaking about Egypt's current struggles for women's rights in these turbulent times. Spinifex has published two of Nawal's books, and in these times of crisis they're well worth a read.
• A Daughter of Isis: The Autobiography of Nawal El Saadawi - Nawal el Saadawi has been pilloried, censored, imprisoned and exiled for her refusal to accept the oppressions imposed on women by sex and class.
• Walking Through Fire - Beginning her working life as a rural doctor, she goes on to set up women’s organisations and publish magazines later banned or endangered by fundamentalist threats. After her name goes on a death list, Nawal El Saadawi flees into exile.
 
Spinifex Director, Susan Hawthorne, is sorely missed as she's currently away on an Italian poetry residency. But, never fear!, Susan is keeping a blog of her poetic adventures and teasing us with the book she's working on while at the BR Whiting Studio!
