Finola Moorhead's Remember the Tarantella is back from the printers. First published to acclaim in 1987, it was heralded as a great work of feminist fiction. This new edition incudes an interview with author and novelist Sue Woolfe about the making of the book.

Ottawa, Canada has been full of Spinifex authors attending the World Women’s Congress. Among speakers at the conference was Betty McLellan, author of HELP! I’m Living with a (Man) Boy and Unspeakable. She spoke about her piece in the forthcoming Big Porn Inc on free speech and fair speech. Other contributors to Big Porn Inc also spoke: Renate Klein on the relationship between Big Porn and Big Pharma; Sheila Jeffreys on strip clubs as the link between pornography and prostitution; Susan Hawthorne on lynching and torture. Susan also spoke about her latest poetry book Cow. US author Kathleen Barry spoke about her book Unmaking War, Remaking Men to packed out sessions.
We’re excited to welcome Danielle Binks on board the Spinifex team as a Digital Co-ordinator Intern. This position was made possible by the APA CAL Publishing Internship and Graduate Program. Danielle brings with her plenty of youth and enthusiasm.

Spinifex author Francesca Rendle-Short whose upcoming book Bite Your Tongue is due for release in September, is featuring in the group show The Five Obstructions, curated by Martina Copley at the VCA Margaret Lawrence Gallery, 40 Dodds Street Southbank until 11 July 2011. Francesca’s piece Just Glad Wrap explores what it means to ‘write with the body’.

Sophie Cunningham has written a thought-provoking article examining the female-dominated, but male-run Australian publishing industry. The publishing gender imbalance has been a hot topic for months now—with female writers, editors and publishers speaking out across the globe. Cunningham, along with other prominent women in the publishing industry, are getting together to create a new fiction prize for women that will right this imbalance, tentatively titled ‘A Prize of One’s Own’.
Here at Spinifex we are very excited about this female-empowering award, and will be eagerly monitoring its creation. But we have to wonder why Australia’s only feminist press was never contacted for comment by any media outlet with regards to this hot-button topic.
While in Australia recently Gail Dines author of Pornland sparked much needed debate about the harm caused by the porn industry. Watch her here in conversation with writer and feminist Monica Dux.
