Dr Gail Dines, author of Pornland: How Porn Has Hijacked Our Sexuality has left our shores but not before igniting much needed debate about the harms of the porn industry and its frightenly ubiquitous presence in today's pop culture.

We’re heading back to the printer for Daughter’s of the Dreaming now in it second print and Getting Real: Challenging the Sexualisation of Girls is now in its fourth reprint.

NEWS

Spinifex director Susan Hawthorne has been appointed co-ordinator of the English-speaking Network of the Paris-based International Alliance of Independent Publishers.

July will see a new member on board the Spinifex team as a Digital Co-ordinator Intern. This has been made possible by the APA CAL Publishing Internship and Graduate Program. It will be exciting to move forward with our many eBook projects and we look forward to having a new member on our team.

MEDIA WRAP

Gail Dines whirlwind Australian visit for the Sydney Writer’s Festival was an outstanding success. Her stance was divisive within the media and she did an amazing job keeping up with the plethora of publicity that came her way.  Here’s some to give you a taste: SWF Porn Wars; ABC TV Q&A; ABC RN breakfast program; ABC Conversation Hour; Triple J Hack and ABC  The Drum. 'Inspiring' was a common theme among those who heard her speak.

Cow has received more great reviews, read Heather Taylor Johnson’s review in Mascara and these words from Rhonda Jankovic at 3CR Spoken Word: Cow is one of the most discussed books I have experienced in the last three years. It is a book that is deeply challenging to the reader. Hawthorne has provided us with a fresh amalgamated mythology along with the flavours of Ancient Greek and Indian poetic structure.

AWARDS

Congratulations to Lara Fergus, who has been short listed for the 2011 Dobbie Award for her debut novel My Sister Chaos.

SPINIFEX BLOG In The Spin last month:

Robin Morgan wrote a thought-provoking blog with a light touch: When Bad News is Good News: Notes of a Feminist News Junkie, which first appeared on the Women's Media Center. And Susan Hawthorne’s poem slut but but, written in response to the recent media frenzy surrounding the slutwalk movement
