Keep warm with some winter reading from Spinifex Press. Print books, eBooks and feminist news online…

NEW RELEASES

Just this week we’ve released The World According to Monsanto: Pollution, Politics and Power, by investigative journalist and documentary maker Marie-Monique Robin. It’s an eye-opening look at this modern giant of the chemical and agricultural industries. The World According to Monsanto is available in print and eBook editions.

This month also sees the release of our eBook-only edition Unspeakable: A Feminist Ethic of Speech by Betty McLellan, author of Beyond PsychOppression and HELP! I’m Living with a Man Boy. The print version of the book is available through OtherWise Publications.

Next month we’ll be publishing My Grandmother, Fethiye Çetin’s memoir of her grandmother’s life and role in Turkey’s hidden Armenian history. Fethiye will be a guest of the Melbourne Writers Festival in September and you can read a great interview with her in the New York Times.

SPINIFEX BLOG

Here’s what’s been happening in the Spinifex blog this month:

Susan Hawthorne wrote about her experience at the Stop Porn conference in Boston in ‘A QUIT PORN Campaign’.

Susan also wrote about our new female prime minister in the post ‘Julia Gillard PM’.

Finally, we have a guest post, ‘Free speech or fair?’ by Betty McLellan, whose eBook Unspeakable is out this month.

The Spinifex blog can be found at the ‘News & Events’ link at the top of our website. You can also find our news page and the newsletter archive there.

IN THE NEWS

Spinifex Press is, of course, excited about Australia’s female prime minister. You can read an article Susan Hawthorne wrote about Julia Gillard at the Women’s Media Center blog.

"Phantoms in the machine", an edited extract from The World According to Monsanto, about the introduction of GM crops in Mexico, appeared in print and online in The Age. You can read the extract here.

This month Melinda Tankard Reist, editor of Getting Real, appeared on the Gruen Transfer's Gruen Sessions, talking about the portrayal of women in advertising. You can watch the segment on the Gruen Transfer website.
