The Spin Newsletter, issue 2, 10 March 2010

This past month has been a busy one for Spinifex. We attended the APA's symposium Digital Publishing in the 21st Century and Susan spoke about moving into eBooks from the perspective of a small publisher. You can read about the symposium on our new blog.

This past week Susan's been in Adelaide for the Adelaide Writers Festival where Di Bell, editor of Listen to Ngarrindjeri Women Speaking and author of Evil and Ngarrindjeri Wurruwarrin was a featured author.

Susan has a new blog post up about International Women’s Day and her experience at the Adelaide Writers Festival.

NEW BOOKS

This month sees the release of Staying Alive, our twentieth anniversary edition of Vandana Shiva's groundbreaking classic, and stock has just arrived from the printer! Here’s a quote from the introduction: “The war mentality underlying the military-industrial agriculture is evident … Monsanto’s herbicides are called ‘Round Up’, ‘Machete’, ‘Lasso’. American Home Products which has merged with Monsanto calls its herbicides ‘Pentagon’, ‘Prowl’, ‘Scepter’, ‘Squadron’, ‘Cadre’, ‘Lightning’, ‘Assert’, ‘Avenge’. This is the language of war, not of sustainability.”

EVENTS

We have just reprinted Earth's Breath, Susan Hawthorne's poetic exploration of Cyclone Larry's devastation of her inner and outer worlds. It will be featured on Radio National's Poetica. The show goes to air on 20 March, the fourth anniversary of Cyclone Larry. Susan's reading includes audio she recorded during the storm. If you miss the broadcast, it'll be available as a podcast on the Poetica website afterwards.

Also on Saturday 20 March is the new poetry event Stopping All Stations at the Station Street Café in Nunawading. Jordie Albiston, multi-award winning poet and author of Nervous Arcs, is the featured performer. Further details can be found on our website.
