Our new website!
Spinifex is excited to announce that our new website is up and running. We have a new blog, and you can sign up for the RSS feed and read it through your favourite feed reader. We’re also posting on Facebook and Twitter (@spinifexpress). Our new Spin newsletters will also be archived on the website. All you need to do to read back issues (starting with this one) is to sign up for a free account at our website and log in.

Our online bookstore has been improved too, to make it easier to find and buy all our great Spinifex books.

Our girls, Our bodies, Ourselves, 24 February
Melinda Tankard Reist, editor of Getting Real, will be talking at “Our girls, Our bodies, Ourselves”, a Barefoot magazine forum on girls, women and bodies; popular culture, sexualisation, social pressures and negative messages; worth, true value, action and rites of passage. Other speakers include Kids Free 2B Kids founder (and Getting Real contributor) Julie Gale and Jane Hardwicke Collings (independent midwife and workshop facilitator), with family therapist and regular Barefoot writer Claire Miran-Khan MC-ing.

Our 2009 bestseller, Getting Real: Challenging the Sexualisation of Girls, hit a nerve in the community, with ongoing media and commentary. You can find a sample of the attention it received on our website here, and editor Melinda Tankard Reist’s blog continues the discussion on sexualisation, as well as highlighting shops and brands that perpetuate this damaging environment. Melinda will be a guest on ABC's next Q&A program on Monday 15 February at 9.30 pm, so don't forget to tune in!

Getting Real will be released in the United States and Canada in April.


Next month brings the release of the twentieth anniversary edition of Staying Alive, Vandana Shiva’s groundbreaking book that helped redefine perceptions of third world women.

This release has been updated with a new introduction by Vandana, which underscores the relevance and currency of Staying Alive as a key text for discussions around ecology, sustainability and feminism.
