In this talk Spinifex author Professor Diane Bell looks back over four decades of

entanglements of anthropology and social justice. She recalls the heady

days of the Australian Law Reform Commission and their work on the

recognition of traditional Aboriginal marriage, to her role as an expert

witness in various cases where anthropological insights were central

(including the Hindmarsh Island Bridge debacle), and her most recent

engagement in a case involving the nature of indigenous relationships

and the concept of a ‘couple’ for the purposes of social security law.

Thursday 16 May 2013, commencing at 12.30pm, at Pilgrim House,

69 Northbourne Avenue Canberra. Sandwiches, tea and coffee will

be provided.

Attendence is free of charge, however numbers are essential for

catering purposes, and gold coin donations will be collected at the

door. Please RSVP to nicole.karman@actlawsociety.asn.au
